HBO Treats Soft Tissue Injury Caused by Radiation Treatment
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy patient, Tammy Schmitt, talks about her experience receiving treatment at the St. Francis Wound Healing Center to restore the suppleness of her skin following radiation therapy for treatment of breast cancer.
During treatment in the hyperbaric chamber, the patient breathes 100% pure oxygen at a level of pressure higher than that of the atmosphere. The pure, 100% oxygen delivered in this pressurized chamber greatly increases the amount of oxygen reaching the body tissues through the bloodstream which advances healing. An increased oxygen level improves the body’s ability to create new blood vessels and promotes the growth of new cells.
